We went for the full Cuban experience from the start of our trip, out flights were with Cubana (Full review).
We stayed in Melia Habana, it is a little outside the city Centre but more quiet.
The hotel was reasonable. I believe Cuban standards are maybe lower than other places in the world. Our room didn't smell very fresh, was not very clean and the breakfast was not good either. The Italian restaurant was nice and they offer a free bus to the Centre. Our room had sea view which was very nice
For visiting the City Centre of Havana we joined a free walking tour : https://freewalkingtourhavana.com/
The old Havana tour was really nice, guide was knowledgeable and we did see quite some sights. At the end you choose whether you want to pay something and how much.
Cubans love their cars and you can see the most exotic and beautiful models all around Havana
We also walked in the newer area of Havana by ourselves
The next day we visited Vinales, according to Fidel Castro one of the most beautiful areas in Cuba.
For our tour we went with Cuba Travel Network
They offer group and private tours. They also offer other services such as transfers etc...
it's a 12 hours tour so a long day but so beautiful!
On our way we made a small stretch/toilet break. They were selling Pina Coladas...
Beautiful sights from Vinales
We visited caves (Cuevo Del Indio) by boat. While not spectacular it was still nice and also cool as it was rather hot outside.
We did a horse ride through the valley
They also have this beautiful wall painting made in 1961 about the Prehistory.
And not to miss, visit a farm where they make Cigars. Maybe try one yourself...
On the last day we spend some more time in Havana relaxing, we did visit one more nice place which was Hotel Ambos Mundos. The hotel features an old style elevator and you can visit room 511 where Ernest Hemingway used to stay. it also has a roof top bar, the perfect place for a mojito or a Cuba Libre. An absolute must do on your visit to Havana.
We liked our stay in Cuba but unfortunately life for the locals isn't easy. Salaries are low, pharmacies empty and few products available in stores at a reasonable price. Havana isn't a clean city, we saw a death rat just laying on the pave walk, there is alot of rubbish and sewage smell on some of the streets. Our hotel was average and it's supposed to be one of the better hotels. Havana is not the spot if you are looking for a luxury holiday but you do see something unique.
